Launching in September 2026, SBG Bozeman’s striking programme is for women and men who want the fitness and excitement of kickboxing, plus the technical understanding to make their movement work against a real, moving person.
No choreographed theatre. No meathead culture. No belief that an injury proves the class was effective.

Beginner-friendly training for people who want to become genuinely capable.
There Are Two Common Versions of Kickboxing. We Are Building Something Better.
At one extreme, kickboxing can become a follow-along fitness class: lots of sweat, noise and combinations, but no opponent, adaptation or lasting technical skill.
At the other, it can become a fight-gym proving ground where newer students learn mainly by being overwhelmed.
Both can feel intense. Neither guarantees intelligent progress.
SBG Bozeman is building a third option: a technically serious programme where the training becomes increasingly alive as you become ready for it. You will work hard. You will also understand what you are learning, why it works and how to test it without turning ordinary practice into a weekly fight.
Fitness You Can Use. Skill You Can Keep.
Kickboxing naturally develops cardiovascular fitness, coordination, balance, speed and resilience. But exercise alone is temporary; skill accumulates.
Our programme will help you develop:
Efficient punches, kicks and connected combinations
Stance, balance and movement in every direction
Defence that leads naturally back to offence
Distance, rhythm and timing against a live partner
The ability to recognise and create openings
Controlled power and accurate placement
Calm decision-making as pressure increases
A repeatable way to diagnose and improve your own performance
You should finish a session tired. More importantly, you should finish with something new that your body and mind are beginning to understand.
What SBG Means by Aliveness
Techniques are easy to perform when the other person stands still and allows them. The test is whether you can find the same movement when distance changes, timing is uncertain and your partner has choices too.
SBG calls training with those essential ingredients Aliveness.
Aliveness does not require recklessness. Coaches can constrain the exercise, reduce the available options, adjust contact and pair people appropriately. That lets a beginner experience genuine timing without drowning in complexity, while an advanced student can work at the edge of their current technical ability.
The purpose of resistance is feedback, not domination.
Why the Coaching Lineage Matters
Straight Blast Gym founder Matt Thornton’s work on Aliveness helped shape a worldwide organisation devoted to functional, evidence-led martial arts training. SBG Vice President Travis Davison is a key global business partner of Thornton and part of the global leadership of SBG International, helping support more than 70 SBG gyms around the world.
SBG Bozeman can draw from that unusually broad coaching laboratory: different bodies, personalities, goals and levels of experience, all testing what helps people learn effectively.
It means the programme is not built around one gifted fighter telling everyone else to imitate him. It is built around a method capable of developing other people.
For Women Who Want to Be Taken Seriously
You may want a demanding workout. You may want confidence and practical striking skill. You may simply want a fascinating pursuit that keeps revealing another level.
None of those goals requires a male-dominated room where recklessness is mistaken for authenticity.
Women at SBG Bozeman will be students of the full art. They will not be an afterthought, a separate fitness audience or a source of lighter rounds. Partners will be expected to match intensity intelligently and help one another improve.
Real inclusion is not lowering the technical standard. It is creating the conditions in which more people can reach it.
For Beginners Who Think They Are “Not That Type of Person”
Many skilled martial artists once stood outside a gym believing everyone inside was already fit, coordinated and confident.
They were not.
Those qualities are built through showing up, receiving useful feedback and solving one manageable problem at a time. Your first responsibility is not to look impressive. It is to pay attention and begin.
If you are thoughtful, willing to learn and capable of treating a partner well, you already possess the qualities we value most.
For Experienced People Who Have Stopped Improving
There is a peculiar frustration in training harder while becoming no more effective. You know more combinations, survive tougher rounds and leave more exhausted, yet the same problems keep finding you.
Often the answer is not greater intensity. It is a better question:
Are you seeing the cue early enough?
Is your position making the next decision easier?
Are your drills preserving the timing of the real exchange?
Does the resistance illuminate your problem, or merely bury it?
Alive, constrained training gives those questions honest answers. That is where plateaus begin to break.
This Programme Is Selective About Behaviour, Not Background
You do not need an athletic résumé. You do not need previous martial arts experience. You do not need to perform aggression.
We are selective about something more important: how people affect the room.
We want exceptional training partners: people who can challenge someone without endangering them, accept correction without defensiveness and take satisfaction in another person becoming harder to beat.
That culture makes everybody better, faster.

Kickboxing in Bozeman: Frequently Asked Questions
Is this fitness kickboxing or real kickboxing?
It is a real striking programme. You can expect a demanding workout, but classes are organised around developing functional technique, timing, defence and decision-making, not merely following combinations for calories.
Is kickboxing suitable for beginners?
Yes. Beginners can start with clear, constrained exercises and progress into greater movement and resistance as their skill develops.
Do I have to be comfortable getting hit?
You do not need to arrive comfortable with contact, and you will not be expected to absorb unnecessary punishment. Functional striking eventually involves appropriately managed contact and resistance, introduced progressively by the coaching team.
Are women genuinely encouraged to join?
Yes. SBG Bozeman wants women to form an important part of the programme from its beginning. The expectation is serious technical training in a culture of control, respect and shared improvement.
Can I join primarily to improve my fitness?
Yes. Kickboxing can be excellent conditioning. The difference is that your fitness work also builds a coherent, progressively tested skill.
